1950s; Eero Saarinen for Knoll - New York, NY

Pair of removable full-shell upholstery covers made to fit Eero Saarinen's molded fiberglass Tulip side chairs for Knoll. The set includes one red and one brown cover, each formed in the chair's distinctive one-piece seat-and-back profile with padded construction, shaped lower-back panels, and piped perimeter edges. Both are upholstered in textured Naugahyde and retain sufficient internal structure to hold their molded shape without a chair shell. These are upholstery covers only; fiberglass shells and pedestal bases are not included.

The brown cover retains part of its original upholstery law label identifying the filling as 100% shredded latex foam-rubber padding and displaying registration numbers CONN-2097 (CAL), CAL-7053, and LA-320. The maker's portion of the label is no longer present. The red cover's tag has been removed.

Introduced by Knoll as part of Saarinen's Pedestal Collection in the 1950s, the Tulip chair paired a sculptural molded shell with a single pedestal base to create the clean, unified profile that became a landmark of modern furniture design.

Both covers are in good condition, retain their shape, and exhibit wear appropriate to age and use. The brown cover has three small stains on the seat, small holes and separation along the seams where the seat meets the back on both sides, and two rust-colored stains on the underside. Its partial upholstery label is frayed and incomplete. The red cover has light staining and scuffing along the front, with its manufacturer's tag removed. Both undersides and seat backs exhibit vertical pressure marks, creasing, and surface impressions from previous contact with chair shells. Additional minor scuffs, wrinkles, and edge wear are present throughout.

We ship smaller objects with UPS and USPS. All shipments are fully insured and adhere to carrier packing guidelines. Shipping costs for smaller items being shipped within the continental United States are free up to $100. If a parcel shipment exceeds $100, the remaining costs will be the responsibility of the buyer. FREIGHT SHIPPING

Free freight shipping is available for most large items. Conditions and restrictions apply: Free delivery is only offered on orders in the continental US. Shipping for freight items is free up to $500. If freight shipping costs exceed $500, the buyer is responsible for covering any amount over $500. Free freight delivery services include: delivery to a freight terminal, curbside delivery, and door-to-door delivery with a private carrier. White glove delivery services are *not included* in our free freight shipping policy, but may be available for a fee. Buyers may be subject to fees in cases where a delivery location is remote/difficult to access, or where a shipment requires special handling. Please contact us for shipping quotes and available services prior to purchasing. 

All shipments are considered FOB (Free on Board), meaning the buyer assumes all responsibility for the shipment the moment it leaves our loading dock. Any risk of loss or damage after this point is assumed solely by the buyer. In the event of damage or loss, we are happy to assist buyers in the claims process if we helped coordinate the shipment. However, we are not responsible for any damages, loss, or deductibles. 

Delivery for freight items averages between 2-4 weeks. Longer delivery times are to be expected in cases where a delivery location is remote or when an order contains especially large or fragile items.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING

All shipments going outside of the continental United States will require consultation prior to shipping. Items will be crated and shipped by boat or by air at the buyer's expense. Please contact us regarding any questions you may have.
