c. 1900s-1910s; John Gund Brewing Co. - La Crosse, WI

Pre-Prohibition wooden beer shipping crate constructed from thick planks with reinforced corners, metal strapping, cutout side handles, and a hinged battened lid. Both the front and back retain crisp, legible black advertising graphics reading "The John Gund Brewing Co. / La Crosse, Wis." surrounding the brewery's crowned King Gambrinus trademark. The spacious open interior and heavy construction reflect its original commercial use transporting bottled beer.

Crate is sturdy and in good overall condition, with staining, scratches, finish wear, abrasions, and age-related discoloration consistent with commercial use and storage. The exterior advertising remains crisp and legible on both the front and back. Hinges remain attached and function appropriately; however, the interior latching mechanism is missing, with its former placement visible as an imprint in the wood. The interior sides have numerous partially exposed nail heads, including one within a handle opening, and additional nail heads are exposed on the inside of the lid. Cutout handles show wear and localized wood loss. A small hole is broken out at the front left corner. Silver paint was applied beneath the hinge hardware before the hinges were reattached.
