1930s; Thomas A. Edison, Inc. - Orange, NJ

Detailed miniature salesman's sample representing a Thomas Edison Pro-Technic Ediphone cylinder-shaving machine. The tall cast-metal cabinet rests on four flared feet and reproduces the full-size machine's upper shaving mechanism and lower cylinder-storage compartment. Its hinged top reveals a miniature roller, guide rod, sliding cutting carriage, cutting point, and ball chain. The lower hinged door opens to a removable rack containing four hollow cylindrical components with four additional unoccupied positions. Small turned pulls complete the cabinet-like exterior, and the underside retains a paper sticker printed "410."

Designed for use with Edison's office-dictation system, a full-size Ediphone shaver removed previously recorded grooves from soft wax cylinders so they could be recorded and reused multiple times. Thomas A. Edison, Inc. was organized in 1910 to consolidate Edison's manufacturing interests and produced Ediphone dictation equipment at Orange, NJ.

Item is in good condition. The exterior exhibits loss of surface pigmentation and scattered paint chips exposing bare metal. Areas of paint loss show darkening, with oxidation visible on one side of the upper section. Both compartments open, although the top compartment does not close completely. The small cutting carriage slides freely across the roller, and its ball chain hangs loose. The lower compartment contains four removable cylindrical components and four empty positions; it is unclear whether additional components are missing or whether this arrangement is original to the design. Operational completeness has not been verified.
